The University of Sheffield has been voted best students’ union in the UK for the sixth year running at the Whatuni Student’s Choice Awards.
Last week all the universities across the UK came together at The Brewery in London for the glitzy ceremony.
Liam Hand, Sheffield Students’ Union President 2022/23, said: “We are so grateful to the members of our student community who choose to review us so positively every year.
“Student reviews have kept us at the top for all these years, and it’s our students who make our SU community so outstanding.”
The WUSCAs are the largest annual university awards in the UK with 11 different categories.
This year, 35000 students voted for this award, through surveys and online reviews.
Shieya Marwaha, 26, a full time SU worker and University of Sheffield graduate, said: “For me personally, having been an international student, I have made a lot of friends here and I feel like it was very welcoming, even the managers, everybody.
“You can go and speak to the staff, its that easy! Its so very welcoming, we definitely deserve it.”
Sheffield Students’ Union hosts club nights and live events. Is the home of over 350 clubs and societies and a student run cinema.
Just last week they celebrated their annual beer and cider festival which organisers said was a huge success.
Chloe Scofield, 19, from California and a first-year journalism student at the university, said: “I am really impressed that we won the number one Students Union.
“It’s made me very proud.”
The union offers advice and support on issues relating to housing, money and academic issues.
Emma Butterworth, 20, a part-time SU worker and second year modern languages and cultures student, said the reason they had won the award was simply due to the fact that “we deeply care about our students”.
Also, at this year’s awards event The University of Sheffield was ranked fourth best in the category of university of the year.
The University of Sheffield was voted the best Student Union in 2021 and 2022 in the Student Crowd University Award.
It was ranked number 1 in the UK for 2020 by Student Hut. And between 2008 and 2018 Sheffield SU was voted number 1 by the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.
