Sheffield spectators ‘disappointed’ after greyhound race cancellations put them out of potential winnings

Spectators of the greyhound racing at Owlerton Stadium near Hillsborough were left frustrated last night after the final races of the day were cancelled.

Owners of the popular ‘six pack’ race night package had a bet on race 13 included in the deal, but could not use this after races 13 and 14 were cancelled.

Owlerton Racing put out a statement on social media: “The remainder of tonight’s card has unfortunately been cancelled because of an issue with the starting traps.

“Sincere apologies for any inconvenience. Updates to follow.”

Carrie Brackley, a customer service assistant from St George’s Close, Sheffield, said: “I’m disappointed. I had my bet on the race just for it to be taken away from me.

“I was enjoying my time watching and expected more races, but it ended early and I didn’t have closure. Further technical difficulties were an inconvenience on top of the disappointment.”

Amy Hamerslagh, 19, a student, said: “I was just really disappointed because this is what we waited for the whole time.

“There was no real reason they gave, it was just like ‘this is it’ and we had to leave. It was a bit of a downer on what was a good night.”

Owlerton Stadium were approached for comment but are yet to respond at the time of publication.
