Yorkshire Bank will shut 39 branches including two in Sheffield. The bank currently occupies premises on Fargate Street which has become a landmark over the years, this iconic branch is one set to close.

It is thought that 200 jobs will be lost because of the closures, including jobs from the 12 Yorkshire based branches. The bank has said that this is because of a shift in how consumers handle their finances, with more opting to do banking online rather than in-store.

The Yorkshire based company has said it will try and offer jobs at other branches or elsewhere within the company to those impacted. Despite this there are still set to be a couple of hundred jobs lost.

Gavin Opperman, from Yorkshire Bank, said: “The decision to close any branch is never an easy one, it is important that we continue to respond to changes in the way that customers bank with us. Changes made allow us to help customers interact with us through a wide range of channels including mobile and online.”

The closure of the branches comes after the company pledged £350m to shift its services online. A sharp increase in use of online services and lack of interest in people visiting branches had been the main reason for these changes.
