A vulnerable man was targeted by bogus officials posing as police officers in Sheffield yesterday.

Just after 4.30pm, two men showed fake ID and demanded money from an elderly couple at their home on Eskdale Road, Sheffield, claiming they were investigating the couple for using counterfeit money.

They then demanded that they must handover all cash in their property otherwise they could face arrest.

An investigation has been launched into the incident by South Yorkshire Police.

Detective Inspector Anna Sedgwick said: “I would like to offer my reassurance that a full investigation is ongoing and we are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry to identify the offenders responsible.

“The men targeted an elderly man in his home, using threats and fear for their own selfish gain.

“Although the man wasn’t physical harmed in the incident, he has been left incredibly distressed and large quantity of cash was stolen.”

The men are described as having local accents, both with dark brown hair and to have been wearing white short-sleeved shirts.

Anyone who was in the area at the time, or has information about the incident is asked to report it via 101 quoting incident number 679 of 1 May.
